LUNG CANCER

What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when the abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way and form a tumor in the lungs.

Smoking, secondhand smoke, air pollution, asbestos exposure, a family story with lung cancer, diesel exhaust, or certain other chemicals may be the factors that cause lung cancer even though the certain cause is not known.

Lung cancer may spread to lymph nodes or other organs, like the brain. Metastasis to lungs from other organs is also common.

All the respiratory systems including the airways and windpipe are the parts in which lung cancer may show off. Generally, lung cancer starts in one or both of the lungs.

There are different types and stages of lung cancer. The stage of the lung cancer will show how big it is, and the type of the lung cancer will show in which cell it gets started.

Knowing which type and stage of lung cancer the individual is facing will help to determine the treatment. Lung cancers are generally grouped into two main types; “small cell” lung cancers and “non-small cell”lung cancers. Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type.

Treatments for Lung Cancer in Turkey (Türkiye)

In Turkey, lung cancer treatments are planned due to the type and stage of the lung cancer. In general treatment options for lung cancer include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. The highly experienced specialists of Turkey will determine one or a combination of these treatments according to the overall health condition of the individual.

Surgery is the first option if it is possible to perform. The surgery aims to remove lung cancer and a margin of healthy tissue. Chemotherapy or radiation as a combined therapy may be preferred before or after the surgery.

Chemotherapy is the option to shrink or kill lung cancer cells. Chemotherapy to treat lung cancer may be taken orally or veins, or sometimes both.

Radiation therapy is the method used to kill cancer cells with the help of high-energy rays. For advanced lung cancers, radiation therapy helps to relieve symptoms, such as pain.

Targeted therapy is the treatment that is used to block the growth and spread of cancer cells.
