Thyroid Cancer

What is Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the thyroid and regulates heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight. Thyroid cancer may occur among men and women between the ’30s to ’60s. Thyroid cancer may be inherited but can also occur without an apparent cause or risk factors.

Thyroid cancer is highly treatable, even if the individual has a more advanced stage. Effective treatments for full recovery vary due to the types of thyroid cancer.

There are four types of thyroid cancer, and all of them are categorized by the appearance of the tumor cells. The most common one is “papillary,” with an amount of  80%.

Papillary thyroid cancer can spread to the lymph nodes, but the good news is it grows slowly and is highly curable.

Follicular thyroid cancer takes second place with up to 15%. Follicular thyroid cancer can spread to the bones and organs. It is harder to treat as it is metastatic.

Medullary and Anaplastic types are rare types that account for about 2% of thyroid cancer diagnoses.

Medullary thyroid cancer is generally inherited; individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer must be under control for an early diagnosis.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer is rare, but it is the most aggressive type that is hard to treat. The Anaplastic kind of thyroid cancer can quickly spread into surrounding tissue and other parts of the body.

What are the Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer?

Most thyroid cancers are asymptomatic in the early stages. For an early diagnosis, a routine physical exam will be helpful. As the tumor starts to grow, the individuals will experience some signs or symptoms such as;

  • Breathing (shortness of breath) or swallowing problems (that get worse day by day)
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Hoarseness or loss of voice
  • A lump (nodule) in the neck
  • Swollen lymph nodes in your neck.
  • Neck or throat pain
  • A persistent cough
  • Tiredness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Unexpected weight loss.
