BRAIN CANCER

What is Brain Cancer?

Brain cancer is the result of abnormal growth or mass cancerous cells in or around the brain. The cells that form the tumor can grow slowly or fast due to the type of tumor. About one-third of brain tumors are malignant and the rest are benign. The form of the tumor determines the kind of treatment.

There are various types of brain cancer treatments. But all of them focus on first removing the tumor and then destroying the remaining cancer cells.

Whether it is malignant or not, if the tumor grows larger it can press the nerves, blood vessels, and tissue which harms brain functions. Therefore it has to be treated as soon as possible.

Men are at about one in 140 risk of developing brain cancer while women have one in 190 risk of developing brain cancer.

What are the Symptoms of Brain Cancer?

Brain tumors can be found at any age including childhood. Symptoms of brain cancer are directly related to the placement of the tumor in the brain. While a tumor near the optic nerve can cause vision problems, a tumor that takes place near the nerves that control motor functions can cause difficulty in speaking.

Common signs and symptoms of brain cancer include;

  • Headache (which gets worse day by day)
  • Numbness
  • Unexplained nausea or vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Vision problems, such as blurred vision, double vision, etc…
  • Speech difficulty
  • Difficulty with balance,
  • Unexplained tiredness,
  • Muscle weakness,
  • Difficulty in making decisions,
  • Loss of sensation or movement in an arm or a leg that occurs gradually,
  • Memory loss

Whether cancerous or not brain tumors can cause serious problems. Each symptom and sign has to be observed to catch the chance of early stage treatment.

Treatments for Brain Cancer in Turkey (Türkiye)

Brain cancer treatment in Turkey varies according to the type, size, and location of the tumor. If the tumor is located in an accessible place and the overall health of the individual is available then surgery will be the first option.

The tumor might be removed fully, partially, or not all. Some brain tumors are easy to operate on, while some are risky as they are located near sensitive areas in the brain and are hard to separate from the surrounding tissue. In such cases, the surgeon will decide to remove the safest amount of the tumor. Even removing all or a part of the tumor will give relief to the individual.

Chemotherapy is another option for brain cancer treatment in Turkey. Chemotherapy can be taken orally or intravenously. The duration of the treatment changes from person to person. Chemotherapy aims to destroy cancer cells that take place in the brain and shrink the tumor. Chemotherapy can be planned with surgery. This type of treatment is named “combination therapy”.

Radiation therapy for brain cancer in Turkey is the treatment that uses high-energy waves, such as X-rays or protons. Radiation therapy aims to destroy tumor cancer cells and shrink tumor tissue just like chemotherapy. Radiation therapy can be planned with the surgery. This type of treatment is named “combination therapy”.

Targeted drug therapy is one of the latest and most effective treatment options for brain cancer. With targeted drug therapy the specific abnormalities that form the tumors are blocked and the cancer cells killed.

These are the most specific treatments for brain cancer. Besides these treatments, your surgeon may also recommend some other medications to support the treatment, and rehabilitation if cancer affects the ability to talk, walk, or perform other daily functions.
