Trigeminal Neuralgia

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is a sudden, severe facial pain that starts near the top of the ear and splits in three, toward the eye, cheek, and jaw. It is often described as sharp, stabbing, lancinating, shooting, or like an electric shock. The pain is so severe that the individual can’t be able to eat or drink after he/she is affected.

Although there are two trigeminal nerves for each side of the face, Trigeminal neuralgia pain most commonly affects only one side of the face, with the pain felt in the lower part of the face. It is a pain that travels through the face in sudden short attacks, lasts only a few seconds, and then stops suddenly. As the condition progresses, the pain can last minutes and even longer.

Trigeminal neuralgia is the largest nerve inside the skull. Trigeminal neuralgia may be caused by trigeminal nerve compression or by cases like surgical injuries, dental procedures, stroke, and facial trauma…

In rare cases, Trigeminal neuralgia can be caused by a tumor compressing the trigeminal nerve or by an underlying condition like multiple sclerosis (MS).

Trigeminal neuralgia is more common among women than men, and most cases are seen when the individual is older than 50.

What are the Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia generally occurs on the right side of the face. The excellent news is Trigeminal neuralgia is not genetic and usually doesn’t run through the family. The main symptom of trigeminal neuralgia is sudden and sharp attacks of pain that last from a few seconds to about two minutes and feels like shooting or jabbing. The other specific symptoms include;

  • Feeling pain that is triggered by touching the face, chewing, speaking, or brushing teeth.
  • Facial spasms that cause pain,
  • Cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, and forehead pains are supplied by trigeminal nerves.
  • Multiple pain attacks that last for days, weeks, months, or longer

Treatments For Trigeminal Neuralgia in Turkey (Türkiye)

In Turkey, trigeminal neuralgia is diagnosed and treated by extensively experienced neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, and dental specialties.

Most people who suffer from trigeminal neuralgia can be treated with medication. In Turkey, the neurologist will help the individuals to select the best drug and the most appropriate dosage. In the early stages, medication treatment is the best way to reduce or eliminate the pain.

Nerve block injections are another option that provides pain relief. The injections will be done to various parts of the nerve.

Surgery will be the option to relieve the pain when the medication and nonsurgical procedures do not adequately control the symptoms or cause persistently troublesome side effects.

Neurosurgeons in Turkey have expertise and experience performing complex surgical procedures. “Surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia” is one of them.
